(The following is a letter to the next President of the United States, Barak Obama. It is firstly, a letter of support in his campaign, secondly and most importantly, a Petition on the Environment. Please sign your name to this petition by way of commenting. Please feel free to add your input in the form of a comment on rescuing the environment.) Dear President Obama,With the economy in turmoil and the healthcare situation in this country faltering and all the other urgently pressing issues confronting you when you take office the desperate condition of our environment becomes relegated to less than immediate. In fact, the rescue of the environment is far more important - and more immediate - than rescuing the economy, establishing universal healthcare or even ending the war in Iraq. The economy is rapidly eroding as we sign this petition and yet this must take second to the issue of the environment. In our desperation to right the markets and halt the deterioration of the credit markets we must first take action to save our planet before we save our economy.Mr. Obama, you have shown a fondness for simile in your speeches to demonstrate a point; let us give you one: There is no food in the kitchen and the kids are crying for something to eat (the economy) yet the house is on fire (the environment), should we first go shopping for groceries or put out the fire?Term after term, so many crises have confronted a new president. Each comes to the office with the noble ideal of taking on the larger issues only to be sidetracked with the cause of the day. Economy, healthcare, war – all are meaningless if we can not live on the planet we call home. Do not become blinded by political nearsightedness, do not let the pundits and politicians sway your commitment to the greatest cause of all time, the most important issue to present itself to any president: the environment. This issue is actually many different issues twisted into one:
- Rise of the mean average temperature creating a “greenhouse” effect.
- Poisoning of our atmosphere with toxic gases like carbon monoxide and other pollutants.
- Poisoning of our waters with toxic heavy metals and other toxic substances
The destruction of our environment is far greater a threat than any enemy that has ever faced us. We must start an aggressive course of correction immediately before it is too late, for the point of no return is rapidly approaching. Soon, very soon issues like the economy or healthcare will not matter at all, because we, our planet and every living thing on it or in it will be –WAIT! Not yet, please not yet. Please do something. We implore you, Do Something! Thomas C. Davis JrBayside, NY
